Reclaiming Our Past with the UGA Material Reuse Program
Location: Grand Hall 1 Chris McDowell and UGA Material Reuse will discuss the importance of reclaiming building materials and their many uses while presenting a hands-on demonstration of how to make a bird box or hanging herb box out of reclaimed materials. Attendees will assemble their own bird box or herb box from pre-cut reclaimed materials from UGA building projects. EcoFocus Film Festival presents EcoKids Short Films Location: Grand Hall 2 The EcoKids short films are a collection of films submitted over this past year, curatedfilms and some favorites from past EcoKids programming. The short films are appropriate (and fun!) for ages 4-99. Come in and enjoy the full program or stay for a few films. Everyone is certain to gain knowledge and a few laughs during this fun 90-minutespecial screening. Made from Scratch: Local and Seasonal Location: Grand Hall 4 Craig Page, Executive Director of PLACE (Promoting Local Agriculture and Cultural Experiences) will emphasize healthy recipes, simple techniques and easy variations to utilize the fresh flavors of local, seasonal produce through a live cooking demonstration.Craig understands the true value of food, home, place and community. He believes that food, grown locally and lovingly in a sustainable, just manner, provides a pleasurable means of exploring the intersections our lives have with our local environment, economyand community. Sessions times: 2 p.m. - 3:15 p.m. BikeAthens Guide to Riding around Town, Plus helmet fitting clinic for adults and children! Location: Grand Hall 1 BikeAthens will present a showcase of riding spots around the Athens area and how best to take advantage of this sustainable, fun, and family-friendly means of alternative transportation. BikeAthens has many great programs for group ride, community outreach and an awesome bike-recycling program. Adults and children are encouraged to bring their helmets for a free fit testing clinic! Solar Basics Location: Grand Hall 2 Drew Bowen of Turnsol Energy, Inc. will present information for residents about the benefits of solar power and how best to harvest the Earth’s natural energy source. Haveyou ever thought about converting your home from electric to solar power? Do you have questions about the incentives set up for people who convert their homes to solar? In an area like the Southeast, this is the perfect place to start. We’ll discuss the importance of capturing solar power as a means to generate electricity for your home, and why it is so important for the sustainability of our planet. Get Down & Dirty, COMPOST! Location: Grand Hall 4 Amanda Tedrow, Agricultural and Natural Resources Agent and Suki Janssen, Athens-Clarke County Waste Reduction Administrator, will show the importance of worm composting while helping participants build their own worm composting bin. Composting is a natural way to recycle organic materials while providing a partial solution to an issue of great concern in many communities – biodegradable materials in our landfill. Vermi composting uses the same basic process of composting with the added benefit of worms. Find out how this process works and why is it fun and easy, all while making your own vermi-composting bin. |
